Commodore's Report April 2008
It has been some time since you have heard from me but hopefully I have seen most of you over the course of the season.
This season has seen many changes and differences from last year. Firstly, it has been very quiet with no major regattas held here. After the full on busy time of last year this was a welcome relief for most. The down side has been that we have struggled for volunteers on most Saturdays.
Some of the changes tried this season have included a registration day and more inside sailing. The registration day was reasonably successful but will be further refined for next year. More inside sailing was programmed and will also be refined for next season. We have ended up doing most of our sailing inside the harbour as limited volunteer numbers meant we couldn't staff all of our patrol boats. The upside has been that sailing inside taught some different tactics and made more of a public show.
Our sailing numbers have been down for a good part of the season, which is a little hard to understand. Any suggestions for improving numbers sailing on Saturdays will be gratefully received. The converse has been that NYC has been well represented at a large number of regattas and achieved the best results by members for a long time. Notable results have been Matt Vincent winning the Starling National and Cam McKee winning the South Island, North Island and National Youth Radials. Both Cam and Matt performed very well in the Laser Youth Radial Worlds held in Auckland recently.
We were also very well represented at the P Class and Optimist Nationals with some very good individual performances. These results show that good results can be achieved from a provincial centre.
The number of members taking advantage of the in house coach has been disappointing this season. Again numbers have been down compared to last season, which I feel is a reflection of the cycles our sport goes through. Our coach, Mike Judd, is leaving us after next weekend having completed his two years with us. We wish Mike well with his future endeavours and will keep you informed on our search for a coach for next season.
The 420 teams racing held a successful regatta last week, which included a large number of our members. Teams racing is an exciting and very quick form of racing that is enjoying a high level of involvement at secondary school level. Most of the racing is being done on Sundays, so any of you interested in viewing this form of racing should take the time one weekend to have a look.
The coming weekend is closing day with a barbeque and prize giving after racing. It promises to be a fun day on the water (weather permitting) and a social time afterwards. For all the non-sailing parents, please bring some sailing gear or a change of clothes, we have something in store for you all.
I look forward to seeing you all on closing day.

Our coach, Mike Judd, is leaving. He's been with NYC for two years and has made many a sailor out of a youngster who couldn't tell a boat from a cow. Mike will be sorely missed. Read his final report here.

Pocket of resistance to the rising tide
Veu Lesa, a 73-year-old villager in Tuvalu, does not need scientific reports to tell him that the sea is rising.
For Tuvalu, a string of nine picturesque atolls and coral islands, global warming is not an abstract danger; it is a daily reality. The tiny South Pacific nation, only 4m above sea level at its highest point, may not exist in a few decades. Its people are already in flight; more than 4000 live in New Zealand, and many of the remaining 10,500 are planning to join the exodus. Others, though, are determined to stay to try to fight the advancing waves.
